What is Engineered Wood?
Have you previously been put off by engineered wood because you thought it was a plastic laminate-type of flooring? Well think again. Engineered wood is real wood, from real trees.
Solid Wood Vs Engineered Wood
While we all love the authenticity and warmth of solid wood, as it expands and contracts it can be prone to movement resulting in gaps, cracks and warping. Engineered wood is 75% more stable than solid wood and won’t crack, buckle or warp even as the temperature and humidity changes. Solid wood also needs lots of care and attention to keep it looking in perfect condition, which can be energy and time consuming.
With engineered wood, you will still get the same great look and natural feel of a solid wood floor but less of the fuss. It is just as hard wearing, can be used in all the same places and will have exactly the same appearance as solid wood, because it is wood.
Engineered Wood at 4homes
At 4homes our chief supplier of engineered wood is Kahrs, an eco-friendly Swedish company who have been engineering wood for over 150 years. Their wood planks are made up of three layers consisting of a top layer of hardwood in the wood of your choice be it oak, maple, ash, beech, walnut or cherry wood. The second and thicker layer consists of a softer, sustainable wood taken from fast growing trees. The last layer of plywood adds extra strength and durability.
Kahrs unique Woodloc system of installation locks the boards together ensuring a completely gap-free floor without the need for nails or adhesive. This simple system makes it simple to fit and also easy to lift and remove if required.

Kahrs engineered wood comes in a wealth of colours, thicknesses and strip sizes so you will be sure to find the perfect choice to enhance your home. At the end of their life all Kahrs floors are 100% biodegradable – completing the natural lifecycle.
