Freestanding Bath and Brass Bathroom

This en-suite bathroom project presented a wonderful design challenge — a listed building on the coast at Beer, East Devon, where the brief called for a traditional aesthetic with all the comfort and practicality of modern fittings.

The clients wanted to open up the space by removing an existing storage cupboard and a bidet, freeing the room to breathe and allowing for a more thoughtful layout. A raised floor was introduced to accommodate a new thermostatic shower system, with a generous enclosure fitted with a rainfall head and adjustable riser — a significant upgrade on the original electric shower.

The centrepiece of the design is a free-standing bath positioned to take full advantage of the coastal setting — oriented towards the window so that those relaxing in the tub can enjoy views out to sea. It is the kind of detail that transforms a bathroom from functional to truly special.

Warm brass brassware runs throughout, lending the room a sense of quiet luxury that sits beautifully within the character of the listed building. A single basin was carefully proportioned to suit the room, maintaining a sense of space without compromising on usability.

Matching tiles on the floor and in the shower enclosure keep the scheme cohesive and clean-lined, allowing the freestanding bath and brassware to take centre stage.
